FAQ For Tutors

Beacon Learners: Tutor Guidelines & Policies

1. How to Receive Tuition Assignments

To apply for assignments, simply submit your details on our registration page, quoting the relevant assignment code. Suitable tutors will be contacted via email or WhatsApp. For the best opportunities, we encourage you to register with us. We prioritize long-term partnerships and give preference to tutors who are reliable, professional, and maintain a strong track record with our agency.

2. Agency Commission Fees

Standard Commission: Our agency commission is equivalent to the first two weeks of tuition fees for a long-term assignment, calculated based on the agreed-upon rate and schedule.

Your Earnings: From the third week onward, you keep 100% of the tuition fees collected. We handle all client billing, so you do not need to collect our commission separately.

Important Responsibilities: If a client fails to pay our commission, you are responsible for collecting it on our behalf. Should an assignment be terminated by the client before one full month of lessons is completed, you will receive a 50% payout for all lessons conducted.

3. Tuition Materials

We trust your professional judgment in tailoring your teaching approach. Any additional materials requiring purchase must be pre-approved by the client, including a clear agreement on associated costs.

4. Tutor Commitment Level

Tutors are expected to commit to at least three months of tuition unless otherwise stated. If you have concerns about this commitment, please contact us directly—each case will be reviewed individually.

Tutors who consistently fail to meet the minimum commitment period may be excluded from future assignments.

5. Assignment Scenarios & Commission Policy

To ensure transparency, below are common assignment scenarios and how commission is calculated in each case:

Scenario 1: Temporary Decrease in Lesson Duration

Case: A client books Tutor A for 2 hours/week but requests only 1.5 hours for the first lesson due to a family commitment.

Policy: The long-term rate remains 2 hours/week. Commission is based on 4 hours (2 weeks × 2 hours). The tutor is paid for 1.5 hours for the first lesson.

Scenario 2: Temporary Increase in Lesson Duration

Case: A client books Tutor A for 1.5 hours/week but requests 2 hours for the first lesson for last-minute exam prep.

Policy: The long-term rate remains 1.5 hours/week. Commission is based on 3 hours (2 weeks × 1.5 hours). The tutor is paid for the additional 0.5 hours.

Scenario 3: Temporary Decrease in Lesson Frequency

Case: A client books Tutor A for 1.5 hours, 3×/week but only requests 1 session in the first week.

Policy: The long-term frequency remains 3×/week. Commission is based on 6 lessons (3 lessons × 2 weeks).

Scenario 4: Temporary Increase in Lesson Frequency

Case: A client books Tutor A for 1.5 hours, 1×/week but requests 3 sessions in the first week for exam prep.

Policy: The long-term frequency remains 1×/week. Commission is based on 2 lessons (1 lesson × 2 weeks).

Scenario 5: Client Termination Before One Full Month

Case: A client ends the assignment after 3 lessons (1.5 hours, 1×/week) due to unsuitability.

Policy: Since termination occurs before one full month, commission is 50% of total fees—equivalent to 1.5 lessons of commission (3 lessons ÷ 2).

Scenario 6: Tutor-Initiated Termination

Case: Tutor A ends the assignment after 2 lessons because the location is too far.

Policy: If termination is due to factors within the tutor’s control (e.g., location due diligence), the tutor will not receive payment for lessons conducted. Tutors are expected to confirm location and travel time before accepting assignments.

Agreement to Terms

By registering as a tutor with Beacon Learners ("we," "us," "our") and/or accepting a tuition assignment, you ("the Tutor") agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. These terms govern your relationship with Beacon Learners as an independent contractor.

2.1. You warrant that all information provided during registration is accurate and complete, including your educational background, qualifications, and experience.
2.2. You agree to maintain a high standard of professionalism in all interactions with Beacon Learners, clients, and students. This includes punctuality, preparedness, and appropriate conduct.
2.3. Beacon Learners acts as an intermediary. We are not liable for disputes between you and the client but may facilitate resolution at our discretion.

3. Assignment Acceptance & Commitment

3.1. By accepting an assignment, you commit to providing tuition services for a minimum period of three (3) months, unless a different term is explicitly agreed upon in writing.
3.2. You are responsible for conducting your own due diligence regarding the assignment details (location, schedule, student level) before acceptance.
3.3. Failure to meet the minimum commitment period without prior written agreement from Beacon Learners may result in your ineligibility for future assignments.

4. Fees, Commission, and Payment

4.1. Commission Structure: For a standard long-term assignment, Beacon Learners' commission is equivalent to the tuition fees for the first two weeks of lessons, based on the agreed-upon hourly rate and schedule.
4.2. Tutor Payment: From the third week onward, you will retain 100% of the fees collected from the client for lessons conducted.
4.3. Our Role: We will invoice the client for the initial commission. However, if a client fails to pay our commission, you are responsible for collecting it on our behalf from the client.
4.4. Short-Term & Special Cases: Specific commission arrangements for short-term assignments (e.g., four lessons or fewer, where the client bears the commission) or other scenarios will be detailed in a separate Confirmation Note for each assignment.

5. Assignment Termination & Cancellation

5.1. Termination by Client: If a client terminates an assignment before one full month of lessons is completed, you will receive a payout equal to 50% of the fees for all lessons conducted up to that point.
5.2. Valid emergencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
5.3. Lesson Cancellations: For the first lesson only, a cancellation or postponement requires a minimum of four (4) hours' notice. Failure to provide notice may result in a cancellation fee of 50% of the first lesson's cost, to be split between the Tutor and Beacon Learners.

6. Teaching Materials & Resources

You are expected to use your professional judgment in preparing lessons. Any teaching materials requiring purchase by the client must receive the client's prior written approval, including a clear agreement on cost.

7. Amendments

FAQ For Parents

Beacon Learners Frequently Asked Questions

Category 1: Our Service & Process

Q1: What subjects and levels do you cover?

We specialise in English and Chinese tuition for Primary to Secondary levels. This is our core focus. We also facilitate matches for other common subjects (Math, Science) at the same levels through our community of tutors. For niche subjects or pre-university levels, please contact us to check availability.

Q2: How do you match my child with a tutor?

Our matching is personal, not automated. We take the time to understand your child’s academic needs, personality, and learning style. We then thoughtfully introduce you to a tutor from our close-knit community who we believe is the right fit—not just academically, but as a mentor who can guide and encourage them.

Q3: What is your tutor screening process?

We believe in transparency. We interview tutors, check their credentials, and assess their teaching approach. As a small, community-focused group, we encourage you to meet the tutor, ask for their certificates, and see if there is a good rapport. We facilitate this connection; you make the final, informed choice.

Q4: Can we meet the tutor for a trial or interview before committing?

Absolutely.

We strongly encourage a no-obligation meeting (online or in-person) before any lessons begin. It’s the best way to ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident about the partnership.

Q5: What if my child doesn’t connect with the tutor or isn't improving?

Your child’s comfort and progress are paramount. If things are not working out within the first month, you can request a free reassignment. You will only pay for lessons already conducted, and we will work with you to find a better match.

Category 2: About Our Tutors

Q6: What are the qualifications of your tutors?

Our tutors come from strong academic backgrounds, including current/former school teachers, university graduates, and subject specialists. Beyond paper qualifications, we value tutors who are passionate, patient, and skilled at explaining concepts clearly.

Q7: Are your tutors familiar with the latest MOE syllabus and exam formats?

Yes.

Our tutors are required to be up-to-date with the current MOE syllabus and examination requirements. Many are actively teaching in schools or regularly coaching students for national exams.

Q8: Do you have tutors who specialise in learning differences (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD)?

We do have tutors with experience and a heart for supporting students with diverse learning needs. Please let us know your child’s specific needs during our consultation, and we will prioritise finding a tutor with the relevant skills and approach.

Q9: How do you ensure the safety and character of your tutors?

Safety is non-negotiable.

We conduct reference checks and interviews. More importantly, we maintain an open channel. We encourage you to be present during initial lessons and trust your instincts. In the extremely unlikely event of any misconduct, we will fully support you in taking appropriate action, including making a police report.

Category 3: Logistics & Practicalities

Q10: What are your rates and payment terms?

Our rates are competitive and reflect the tutor’s experience and the assignment’s specifics. You pay the tutor directly after an initial period. We are completely transparent about costs before any commitment is made—no hidden fees.

Q11: Are there any registration or agency fees for parents?

No.

Our matching and support service is free for parents. Our commission is arranged with the tutor.

Q12: Where do lessons take place?

Lessons are typically held at your home for convenience and comfort. Online lessons can also be arranged based on mutual agreement between you and the tutor.

Q13: What is your policy for cancelling or rescheduling a lesson?

We encourage mutual respect for everyone’s time. We recommend a clear cancellation policy (e.g., 24 hours' notice) be agreed upon directly with your tutor. For the very first lesson, we require at least 4 hours' notice for cancellations to compensate the tutor for their committed time.

Q14: Who provides the learning materials?

The tutor will prepare core lesson materials. If any additional books or resources need to be purchased, the tutor will discuss this with you first for your approval.

Category 4: Our Philosophy & Outcomes

Q15: How do you measure my child’s progress?

Progress is more than just grades. We look for increased confidence, participation in class, and better understanding of concepts. Your tutor will provide regular feedback, and we encourage open communication between parents, tutors, and our team.

Q16: What is your teaching philosophy/methodology?

We believe in building confidence, not just drilling content.

Our approach focuses on understanding core concepts, developing critical thinking, and fostering a positive mindset towards learning. We support, we guide, and we encourage.

Q17: Do you guarantee results or grade improvements?

We wish we could guarantee an ‘A’, but true learning doesn’t work that way. What we do guaranteeis our commitment: to find you a dedicated tutor, to provide consistent support, and to work with you to create the best possible environment for your child’s growth. The results of that are often deeper and more lasting than a single grade.

Q18: How are you different from the big tuition agencies?

We are a small, close-knit community. We make thoughtful matches and offer genuine support. Think of us as your dedicated academic support group.

For full details, please refer to our separate Privacy Policy (Section 13).

3. Fees and Payment Structure

Our Service Fee: Beacon Learners’ matching service is free for Clients. Our commission is levied upon the Tutor.

Initial Payment: Upon completion of the first two weeks of lessons (or as stated in your Confirmation Note), you agree to pay Beacon Learners for those lessons. This payment represents our commission, which is collected from the Tutor's fees.

GST: All payments to Beacon Learners are subject to a 9% Goods and Services Tax (GST), for which you will receive an official tax invoice.

Subsequent Payments: After the initial period, you may pay the Tutor directly, with the payment method and schedule to be mutually agreed upon. Payments made directly to Tutors are not subject to GST.

Additional Lessons: Any additional tuition services (e.g., a new subject or teaching a sibling) must be disclosed to Beacon Learners and are subject to a separate commission, which will be charged to the Tutor.

4. Short-Term Assignments & Commission Bearing

For assignments of four (4) lessons or fewer, a Client may choose to bear the commission fee to increase the likelihood of securing a suitable Tutor. This arrangement is final and non-transferable; should the assignment extend beyond the agreed number of lessons, the commission structure will not revert to the Tutor.

5. Tutor Reassignment and Cancellation

Reassignment: If you are unsatisfied with the Tutor within the first four (4) weeks, you may request a free replacement. You are only required to pay for all lessons conducted up to that point.

Cancellation by Client: If you cancel the assignment before four (4) full weeks of lessons are completed, a cancellation fee of 50% of the total lesson fees for lessons conducted is payable to Beacon Learners. This fee is split with the Tutor to compensate for their committed time. We will handle exceptional circumstances (e.g., emergencies) on a case-by-case basis.

6. Last-Minute Cancellations & Postponements

For the first lesson, a minimum of four (4) hours' notice is required for postponement or cancellation. Failure to provide sufficient notice will result in a fee of 50% of the first lesson's cost, to be split between Beacon Learners and the Tutor. Emergencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

7. Late Payments

Beacon Learners reserves the right to impose a late-payment fee of S$50 for every 14-day period that a payment is overdue, following an initial one-month grace period. Additional administrative fees for debt recovery may also apply. We further reserve the right to pursue legal action or file a claim with the Small Claims Tribunal to recover outstanding debts. All late fees are subject to GST.

8. Tutor Qualifications

While Clients may request to see a Tutor's educational certificates, and Beacon Learners will facilitate this request, Beacon Learners does not guarantee the accuracy of the information provided by Tutors. We conduct vetting procedures to the best of our ability but are not liable for any misrepresentation by a Tutor. In the rare event of suspected fraud, we will assist you in making a police report.

9. Service Quality and Disclaimer

Beacon Learners strives to provide the best possible match but does not guarantee any specific academic improvement. Once a lesson is conducted, the fee for that lesson is payable. You may cancel the service at any time if unsatisfied but remain liable for all lessons attended.

10. General Disclaimer

Beacon Learners acts as an intermediary and is not liable for the actions, conduct, or disputes between Clients and Tutors. While we will assist in conflict resolution, all liability for such issues is disclaimed to the fullest extent permitted by law.

11. Anti-Collusion Clause

Any attempt to circumvent Beacon Learners’ commission (e.g., engaging a Tutor introduced by us directly without going through our payment process) is considered fraud. We will not hesitate to pursue civil action and make a police report to recover lost commissions and damages.

12. Amendments

Beacon Learners reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior notice.

13. Privacy Policy

By using our services, you agree to our Privacy Policy, which governs how we handle your data. We will not rent or sell your personal information. Data is shared only as necessary to provide our services (e.g., with your confirmed Tutor) or when legally required. Our full Privacy Policy is available upon request.
